Voting in the EU Referendum on 23 June 2016

Voting in the Referendum to decide whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Union will take place on Thursday 23 June 2016.

The question that will be on the ballot paper for this referendum is: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

You will required to mark your preference on the ballot paper.

If you aren't already on the electoral register, you must register by 7 June 2016 if you want to vote in the EU referendum on 23 June 2016. You can register to vote online.

Who can vote in the EU Referendum

You can vote in the EU referendum if you are registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on 23 June 2016 and are one of the following:

  • A British or Irish Citizen living in the UK
  • A Commonwealth Citizen living in the UK
  • A British Citizen living overseas who has been registered in the UK in the last 15 years
  • An Irish Citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years

Register to vote

If you are already registered to vote then you will receive a poll card in the next week or two confirming your right to vote.

If you are not registered to vote the easiest way to do this is to register to vote online. The information is sent straight to your local registration officer who will contact you if they need more information.

Alternatively you can contact Harborough District Council's elections team by email on or call 01858 821336 or 01858 821372 for a registration form.

You must be confirmed registered by no later than Tuesday 7 June 2016 to be able to vote in the EU Referendum.

Postal and proxy votes

You can vote in the referendum using a postal vote. However, applications to vote by post received from 11 May 2016 onwards will not receive their postal ballot pack until after 14 June 2016. Apply to vote by post by completing a postal vote form.

If you will not be able to vote in person and do not want a postal vote, you can appoint an elector to vote on your behalf - this is known as a 'proxy vote'. Applications to vote by proxy are available from Harborough District Council's elections team, email on or call 01858 821336 or 01858 821372 for a registration form.
