Cemetery Policy

The Parish Council reviews its policy with regard to the operation of the Cemetery on a regular basis. Click on the link below to view the current policy.

Fees and Charges

The purchase of burial or cremation spaces will be permitted to non-residents but will incur a payment of triple fees at the time of purchase. Any previous resident of the Parish who subsequently resided in a retirement or care home not exceeding a maximum of five years prior to their death will not be subjected to the triple fee charge.

Deed of Grant - Purchase, or Transfer, of Exclusive Rights to Burial in a Grave or Cremation Plot

From 1 April 2023 (all fees triple if a non-resident)

£315.00 Purchase of exclusive rights - (single -8ft x 4ft x 5ft or double 8ft x 4ft x 7ft grave)

£150.00 Purchase of a cremation plot (2ft x 2ft x 2ft)

FOC Provision of an earthen grave in children's section up to age 10 years

FOC Provision of an earthen grave 10 years - 18 years

Please note that the purchase of exclusive rights does not confer title to the land occupied by the grave or cremation plot, but the right to be buried there. Exclusive rights last for 100 years from the date of purchase and maybe surrendered at any time on return of the deed to the Parish Council Office.

Please note that we can only accept payment by cash, cheques made payable to Broughton Astley Parish Council or via BACS (details provided on request). We are unable to accept debit or credit card payments.

Interment

From 1 April 2023 (all fees triple if a non-resident)

£175.00 interment of a person in a burial plot - 18 years and over (single -8ft x 4ft x 5ft or double 8ft x 4ft x 7ft grave)

Funeral Director to arrange a Gravedigger.

£120.00 Interment of a person in a cremation plot - 18 years and over

£50.00 - Digging of a cremation plot provided by Broughton Astley Parish Council

FOC - Interment of a child whose age at the time of death did not exceed 18 years of age.

For guidance, monuments must not exceed the following dimensions.

Burial plots - Monuments must be no more than 3 feet (0.9 metres) in height, including the base when fixed. The base must be no more than 3 feet (0.9 metres) by 2 feet (0.6 metres). To enable the ground to settle sufficiently headstones cannot be erected within 7 months of the burial, except in the case of infant burials for which headstones can be erected as soon as approval has been obtained from the Parish Council.

Cremation plots - Memorial tablets must be no more than 18 inches (46 cms) thick. The base must not exceed 2 feet (0.6 metres) by 2 feet (0.6 metres). Flower containers must be contained within these dimensions.

General Administration

£35.00 - An administration fee will be applied to undertake record searches, documentation transfers, etc.

£60.00 Installation of Memorial Bench by Groundsman (up to a maximum of 12)

Headstones and Memorials

From 1 April 2023 (all fees triple if a non-resident)

£120.00 Placement of a headstone on a grave - maximum height 3ft including base when fixed, base dimensions max 3ft x 2ft

£120.00 Placement of a memorial vase with inscription

£120.00 Placement of a tablet or other approved monument on a grave

£30.00 A plaque on memorial wall maximum size 7" x 2"

£100.00 Placement of a memorial tablet on a cremation plot

FOC - Permission to erect a memorial, including a headstone, for a burial or cremation plot for a person whose age at the time of death did not exceed 18 years of age but not the price of any memorial

£50.00 Permission for placing an additional inscription on a memorial

Please note that headstones, vases, tablets and other monuments must be approved by the Parish Council prior to erection. Proposed inscriptions must also be approved. Please complete the Memorial Permit Application and send details of your proposed monument and/or inscription (including dimensions and drawings or photographs) to the Council Office, Station Road, Broughton Astley, Leicester, LE9 6PT.

Grounds Maintenance

The Parish Council is responsible for grounds maintenance at the Cemetery, but new graves will be allowed to settle for seven months before being levelled and re-seeded with grass. Relatives of the deceased are responsible for the upkeep of headstones and memorials.

The Council Office is next to the Village Hall. The Office is open between 9am and 1pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The Office is closed to the public on Wednesdays and at weekends.
